What would heaven look like? It wouldn t be too hard to imagine once you d get to Lake Tahoe . Here's a little geography lesson of one of earth s great wonders, a physical mapping of a piece of heaven found right in our midst .

Lake Tahoe is situated along the border of California and Nevada bordered by the Sierra Nevada on the west and the Carson Range on the east. It can be roughly estimated that Lake Tahoe is two thirds within the California region and a third within Nevada. On the east, Lake Tahoe Basin s floor is 92 feet below the surface of Carson Valley .

Lake Tahoe is subdivided in the following communities: Carson City, North Lake, Truckee, Carson Valley, South Lake, West Lake.

Carson City

Carson City is Nevada s Small Town Capital. Located in the Eagle Valley , bald eagles as well as some wild horses visit occasionally to the community s delight.

Some of the traditional events to watch out for by the entire family are the Nevada Day Parade and the Annual Carson City Rendezvous . There are also a great variety of restaurants, shopping centers, museums, theaters and galleries within the community.

Carson Valley

Carson Valley can be found at the heart of northern Nevada, right smack in the middle of the great areas of Nevada. Tagged as the other side of Nevada, this place has a lot of exciting things to offer. It is quite accessible too, being just 14 miles from Carson City , 44 miles from Reno and 14 miles from east of Lake Tahoe .

North Lake

North Lake is a quiet little place that allows you the luxury of solitude, away from the hustle and bustle of the contemporary world. Encompassing the area from Kings Beach to southeast of Incline Village , it is dominantly rural, being also nestled between breathtaking mountain peaks and coastlines of the north shore of Lake Tahoe . It boasts of its excellence in cultural, gourmet and recreational achievements.

South Lake

South Lake has it all: the finest cross country ski areas in the region, some of the most superb mountain hiking paths in the Sierra, plus snowmobiling, year-round horseback, biking on mountain trails, and the five major casinos on the Nevada side. What more can you ask for?

Home to 24,000 happy citizens, South Shore is a land that encompasses various areas including Emerald Bay, Rubicon Point around the bottom of the lake, Glenbrook , and Spooner Lake .

Truckee

Truckee is conveniently located at the crest of the Sierras, with its magnificent scenery to boast of as well as great trails for spontaneous exploration. Considered one of the top 10 mountain towns in the country that is best to live in and visit, its business establishments include distinctive shops, restaurants, fun bars, cozy inns, and other venues that still has the touch of the Old West era.

West Lake

West Lake is the historic venue of Tahoe. There are crossroads where tourists can disembark from the train that connects Lake Tahoe to Truckee , after which ferry transports are offered to other points around the lake.
